Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic provides free, comprehensive medical care and preventive health services to adults who have no health insurance and cannot otherwise access those services.

The Clinic is pleased to offer the Access Clinical Education Program (ACEP) to serve as an educational training site for aspiring health care professionals who wish to provide high quality care to those who typically face barriers to care.

This clinical training opportunity will allow for current 3rd and 4th year medical students and aspiring nurse practitioners to work one on one with Clinic volunteer physicians and nurses while serving a low-income population, gaining both technical skills and understanding of the existing gaps in healthcare, preventative medicine and health equity.

The program accepts up to two students per semester per clinical volume for a 4-8 week minimum. All applicants must be currently enrolled as a medical student in the 3rd or 4th year, or family nurse practitioner and seeking clinical experience. *Currently, we can only consider requests for January 2027, with applications welcome beginning in June 2026.
