Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Alliance
Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic, a free clinic in Charleston, SC, is a member of the Volunteers in Medicine (“VIM”) Alliance. The Free Clinic was modeled after the original idea of Dr. Jack McConnell who began the first Volunteers in Medicine clinic in Hilton Head, SC in 1992. VIM is a national network of free clinics that use retired and practicing medical professionals and community volunteers to provide healthcare to the uninsured. There are currently 88 clinics in the VIM program nationwide.
South Carolina Free Clinic Association (SCFCA)
The South Carolina Free Clinic Association (SCFCA) purpose is to support free clinic staff and volunteers, build capacity to provide medical care to the indigent, and gather reliable information on the medical needs of working and non-working poor people in our state.
National Association of Free Clinics (NAFC)
The National Association of Free Clinics (NAFC) is the only nonprofit 501c(3) organization whose mission is solely focused on the issues and needs of the more than 1,200 free clinics and the people they serve in the United States. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the NAFC is an effective advocate for the issues and concerns of free clinics, their volunteer workforce of doctors, dentists, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, technicians and other health care professionals, and the patients served by free clinics in communities throughout the nation.
