Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic was recently featured in the April 2018 edition of Charleston Magazine, in a piece titled The Doctors Are In, by Stratton Lawrence.
The article highlighted the Clinic’s move into their brand new, seven exam room medial facility, located at 3226 Maybank Highway, Building C, on Johns Island. It is expected that the new facility will be able to accommodate up to 600 patients a month; currently, the clinic treats around 350 uninsured adults who live or work on Johns, James or Wadmalaw Islands.
Lawrence writes, “Apart from being free to patients, there’s nothing ‘budget’ about the medical attention offered by the clinic. In addition to staff, including medical director Dr. Richard Ulmer, 122 volunteer doctors, nurses, and office workers see 350 patients each month. ‘I can offer my patients here the same level of care that I did in my own practice,’ says Hayes, who serves as the chair of the clinic’s board of directors.”
